Making your mark on stone is one of the oldest forms of artistic expression and the enjoyment stone carving brings is a great antidote to the stresses and strains of an ever increasing virtual digital world; stone carving could not be more real.

Stone carving is a truly immersive experience and joining our courses will give you an opportunity to enjoy learning a new craft in a friendly supportive environment. Don’t worry if you’ve never carved before, you’ll be given step-by-step instruction and plenty of encouragement. We’re also keen to welcome those who might have tried their hand before; you’ll receive practical tips to help further improve your carving.

COURSE DETAILS

Our stone carving courses have specific themes, which means the tutor can provide the same step by step instruction to each participant. This year’s ‘Green Goddess’ theme is inspired by an almost 2000-year-old tradition of green man carvings, a common feature in medieval churches. Our Green Goddess is a stylised face engulfed by foliage.

You will be carving Maltese limestone which is soft enough to enable you to complete your carving in two days but still hard enough to take enough detail and allow your creativity to come to the fore.

You will be provided with the stone to carve and keep, and the use of tools and safety equipment. You will receive one-to-one guidance from the course tutor, Tony Crellin, who has been carving in stone for over 30 years .

All courses start at 9.00 a.m. and finish at 4.00 p.m. with a mid-day lunchtime break, and time made for the all essential mid morning and mid afternoon brew.

2 DAY OUTDOOR EVENT – THE SETTLEMENT, MARYPORT

Our outdoor event is based at The Settlement. Originally the 18th century residence of a local ship owner, it became the Maryport Educational Settlement in 1937. Today it’s owned by a charitable trust, The Castle Hill Trust, which is dedicated to providing community and arts based facilities. The courses will held in The Settlement gardens with marquee cover provided if required.

Tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available throughout course as part of the booking, attendees to bring their own packed lunch. Onsite parking available.

2 DAY INDOOR EVENT – HILL HOUSE STUDIO, ASPATRIA.

A former barn workshop has been converted into a fully equipped stone carving studio for up to 8 people.

Teas, coffee and soft drinks provided throughout the weekend. A filling buffet lunch will be provided on both days with a wide selection of homemade goodies. Onsite parking available.
